Summer Haircare Routine and Success

This summer may be a little different than what we are used to due to COVID-19, but I want to make sure you are prepared to protect your hair from unwanted colors that summer activities can create.

If you are wearing Natural Beaded Rows or any type of hair extension it is important to understand your extension hair and your natural hair is porous. What does that mean? It means your locks want to absorb any moisture it can. If moisture is around your hair wants to absorb it. It does not matter if the moisture will discolor your hair or damage it... moisture is around your hair will try to drink it up.

When you are outside hiking, biking, laying out or doing other activities you might naturally sweat. If your hair is laying on your sweaty back or in a ponytail rubbing your back, and you are also wearing sunscreen, chances are your hair will try to absorb your sweat and your sunscreen. This is especially important for women with lighter colored hair. Avobenzone is a chemical sometimes used in sunscreens. This chemical can cause hair extensions to turn a peach/salmon color that sometimes may be extremely difficult to remove. It is important to check the ingredients of your sunscreens to ensure Avobenzone is not one of the chemicals. Bare Republic offers mineral sunscreens without Avobenzone. I highly recommend looking into Bare Republic's sunscreens to see if you can find something that will work well for both your skin and hair. It can usually be found at Target, Ulta or similar retailers.

The next topic I want to cover is swimming pools and the havoc chlorine can create on your hair! Whether you are wearing hair extensions or not it is important to allow your hair to absorb as much water/moisture as it can before entering a pool full of chlorine. If you know you will be dunking your head under water I recommend wetting down your hair in advance. If you want to take it a step further add some conditioner to your hair to act like a barrier against the chlorine. When getting out of the pool make sure to brush out your extensions immediately to remove any knots. Washing your hair with a product that will gently remove chlorine from your hair is a

must. The professional hair care line Malibu created a shampoo and conditioner that gently removes chlorine from your hair. If their product is not used every time you are in a pool Malibu also offers Swimmer a treatment that can be done at home to remove unwanted chlorine from your hair. Light Styling offers Malibu products for the pool, and also carries Weekender by Unite which also helps remove impurities from your hair.  Click here to shop Malibu and Unite products at Light Styling.

With the products mentioned above you can go into the summer feeling armed and ready to protect your hair. My last advice is to remind you to NEVER go to sleep with wet extensions. Always make sure your extensions are dry, and gently braided or twisted before jumping into bed. This will allow your Natural Beaded Rows to look beautiful at the start of every day.
