Protect Your Hair This Winter From Cold Weather Dryness

The weather in Colorado is turning colder and that means the air is even drier than usual. Colorado has very low humidity most of the year, but the winter months are the driest. When you find yourself pulling out the humidifier, using more lotion, and drinking more water, remember that your hair also needs more moisture.

The winter months are one of the hardest times of the year on your hair. This time of year even rivals the hair damage created by the fun times in the summer sun. In order to best protect your hair this winter follow these few helpful tips.

Wash your Hair Less Frequently

Frequent hair washing robs your head of its natural oils. These oils serve as a protective layer for your hair and scalp. By washing your hair less frequently, you are able to preserve the moisture that naturally occurs. Use a product like Unite’s 7 Seconds Refresher, a dry shampoo, to give your hair a fresh and clean feel between washings. You should not wash your hair any more than two or three times a week.

Use Unite’s U Oil and 7 Seconds Detangler

Hair is most elastic when it is wet. After you cleanse, condition, and towel dry your hair, spray a few pumps of 7 Seconds Conditioner Leave in Detangler. The detangled will help loosen any knots and has a balance of protein and moisture to nourish your hair. U Oil is my favorite product offered by Unite. I decided to carry the Unite Line solely because of this amazing product. Use the oil before you style your hair to moisturize and nourish your locks. Your hair receives even more nourishment if the U Oil is used in combination with Unite's 7 Seconds Condition Leave In Detangler. If you notice your hair seems dry between washings, you can add a dab of U Oil to the ends of your hair to moisturize. U Oil helps coat the hair cuticles sealing in moisture and preventing dryness that often leads to breakage. This is especially a must-have product for NBR hair extension care and women with long hair.

Use Heat Tools Sparingly

Heat damage can lead to dry, brittle hair year round, but during winter months heat damage is even riskier. Washing your hair less will help with this because you can use heat tools to style your hair only on the days you cleanse. Use products like Unite’s Elevate Mousse and Blow and Set for added moisture and to maintain your style. These products also create a barrier to protect your hair from heat damage. Check out this video on how to properly curl your hair in order to avoid unnecessary damage.

Protect Your Hair When Outdoors

Just like you protect your skin from the cold weather elements with coats and gloves, it is important to also cover up your hair when you are outside on cold days. Here in Colorado, the weather during the winter months can be cold, dry and sunny. This combination can be killer for healthy hair. Find a hat that isn’t too tight and be sure to pick materials that are not too coarse or are lined with a more delicate material like silk.

Your hair is your best accessory. Remember as the temperatures drop and the air becomes drier to nourish your hair to keep it healthy and looking great all winter long.
